Character Counts and Kids on the Block

Character Counts!

Character Counts! (CC!) was launched in the Barrington area by BJWC in 2012. CC! is a national awards program to advocate core ethical values through the "Six Pillars of Character" - namely Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Since 2001, these awards have been offered to people who are not usually in the limelight, most often someone who may never have received an award before. Their character may be exemplified in a unique act of kindness, or a track record of fairness, responsibility, etc.

“Six Pillar Awards” of Character Counts!

CC! awards are given to a cross-section of community members; including but not limited to students, coaches, employees of local businesses, community volunteers, and neighbors. If the nominee is a child, the act must be independent of adult prompting. If nominees are considered, they must be verified by two references. Award recipients may reside or work in the District 220 attendance area. Specific examples of the Six Pillar Awards traits and behaviors can be found here.

Kids On The Block

Kids On The Block (KOTB) is an educational puppet program performed by members of BJWC designed to enrich the study of and promote acceptance of differences and social issues. This puppet program is an effective tool in teaching third and fourth grade students in the Barrington community school district. Students respond enthusiastically to the puppets as they dramatize the problems associated with being “different”. Puppet presentations are available to address such issues as bullying, autism, asthma, diabetes, divorce and ADHD.

Contact Kelli and Mary to schedule a KOTB appearance at your school.
